In January 1992 Dr. Stewart,67, of Century disappeared. The Century doctor departed from the Atmore Municipal Airport and has not been seen or heard from since. He was last seen about 10:30 p.m. Jan.14, 1992 when he made his rounds at Jay Hospital. Dr. Stewart was determined to be missing when he failed to return to the hospital Wednesday morning. His truck was found at the Atmore airport, where he kept a private plane for the past twenty years. He had filed no flight plans before departing. Airport officials said that Dr. Stewart's airplane was at the airport at 5 p.m. Tuesday when they closed and noticed it gone when they arrived at 6 a.m. Wed.

Reports Wednesday night that an airplane had gone down near Opp, AL, were unconfirmed after search crews were unable to locate any sign of the alleged downed aircraft. The Opp police department received a telephone call about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday from a man identifying himself as a ham radio operator in Illinois, according to published reports. He told police he heard on his radio that a single-engine airplane had gone down about two and a half miles north of Opp. Air and ground crews searched the area for more than 10 hours but did not turn up anything, and the search was suspended. According to reports the plane had six hours of fuel, and no other reports show that Dr.Stewart stopped at any other airport to refuel.
